As every April, Leipzig presents itself with the Automobil International [AMI] as a successful and modern automotive service centre. Organiser, press and public expect new records and the first statistics justify these assumptions. An increase of exhibition space of 5% is a remarkable rate, especially in these times. First of all, it is an Italian manufacturer that underlines the development of this exhibition. Started in 1990 as a regional show, the international importance of the AMI has been constantly raised through the years. Now, also Ferrari has recognised the meaning of the Automobil International and reserved a sufficient exhibition area to show its cars only one Autobahn exit away from Porsche's test and assembly facility.

Two further debutants come from the United States. America's number one, General Motors, presents its divisions Cadillac and Chevrolet to the Leipzig public. Rumours say GM intends a big introduction in the German premium car market. It eventually is a good reason to show its cars at Deutschland's most important auto exhibition of 2004. By the way, coming here they are even closer than Ferrari to the place their direct rivals come from because, the newest BMW plant is adjacent to the fair ground. Also very optimistic, the rest of that trade's branch. At the press conferences, positive thinking was all around. But neither expectations nor attention here is an indicator for the market's development. Sadly! Because - as we already said - the dynamic of Leipzig is strong enough to run against the general trend.

And so it comes that there are lots of companies that exhibit their range here again, after a few years of being absent. Mercedes tuner Brabus is one of those that arrived at the conclusion that the Leipzig show is worth the money. Also the wheel maker Borbet is back again. In times of low budgets, DE Motorsport goes a different way. The auto tuner attends the AMI but doesn't take part in the Essen Motor Show this year - Germany's biggest exhibition for car tuning. Also thanks to the significantly increased space of the tuning sector, the event occupies 4 halls, instead of 3 ones as in the years before.
