It is designed to be a basis for the world's most famous evo sedan and it
is Germany's number one export car - maybe just because of that. The BMW 3-series.
It ranges from comfy diesel models to all-out high-performance evolutions, made to
even beat the native iconic sports car, the 911 Carrera. But despite this variety,
the highly-reputed automobile refiner Alpina have spotted some niches in the programme
of the line for their own interpretations of the middle class car.
The first one is a Bimmer powered by a self combustion motor. The specialists from
the Alps - as the firm's name suggests - are of the opinion that there is a gap to
put their own thing in between the 320d and the 330d. And the D3 called 'Three' hit the
middle of the range by performance and price. But what really matters is driving
abilities when it comes to a car of this parentage. The basis for the Alpina D3 is
the 320d that is 30,950 Euros in Germany. The Bavarian BMW enhancers demand 4,950 on
top of this rate. In other words: 71,800 European 50 cent coins. Just kidding.
35,900 Euros for the sedan, the Touring version is 1,750 more: 37,650 Euros.
For that buyers get a set of 18inch wheels in the traditional Alpina design, a front
lip - including Alpina writing - modified suspension, consisting of stiffer stabilisers
and suspension struts shortened by 20mm at the front and 15mm at the rear, optimised
exhaust system, blue instrument dials and some badges to make clear that it's more
than a standard Three. And last but not least, a performance upgrade from 163 to 200hp
is amongst the features that distinguish the D3 from the ordinary 320d. Considering
Munich's prices for options, the extra charge seems okay. All the more Alpina uses
some parts from the bigger 330, such as intercooler, injectors and gearbox.
