Tomorrow, on March 28th, the 2009 AMI begins. Fortunately it takes place,
in contrast to the famous show at Tokyo - but recession has also affected the
Leipzig motor show. Many car makers cancelled their attendance.
Amongst them reputable houses such as Volvo, Chrysler, FIAT, Alfa Romeo,
Lancia and SEAT. It also didn't come as a surprise that SAAB was missing,
because of the serious economical trouble they are in. That BMW isn't
there, on the other hand, is nothing but embarrassing!
Especially because the company produces the 3- and the 1-series at a facility
directly adjacent to the exhibition ground. Another direct competitor that
also manufacturers cars in town, Porsche, was there - like Audi and
Mercedes-Benz. And even Lexus from Japan present themselves on a small stand! So many cars make their Germany
debut on the AMI, however, the range of real newnesses is rather small.
Though there aren't no real world debuts of new models, some very interesting
new versions are presented at the exhibition. Audi are showcasing the TT RS
Roadster for the first time, for example. Volkswagen celebrate the revival
of a traditional Golf model: The GTD. We adapt our comprehensive coverage
and will focus on the most remarkable cars and newnesses this time. And,
since it's a tradition, we're also trying to make a gallery with artistically
taken details as desktop backgrounds.
