It must have been a scenario like in a thriller, when the designers of Lotus
broke in Renault's design studio at Paris to steal the exterior sketches of
the French's next coupe model. At least, Lotus new sports car, called the
Elite, looks as is it has been created by the stylists from France. Especially
backwards the A-pillar. While the
wheels looks like ones from the aftermarket.

The shapes relating the air outlets over the front lamps however are a pretty
good idea. But the
styling lacks some muscles. On the other hand, Lotus
cars so far excelled in low weights, not in extremely large displacements or
most powerful engines. A look at the data sheet doesn't
confirm this. Featuring a heavy 5.0 Litre V8 engine, 720 Nm and 620 HP are generated.
Oh sorry: 620 PS,
as the Lotus press release say! (see Technical Data at the right) As a 2+2 seater the Elite is more roomy
and comfortable than recent Lotus cars. At the same tim it weights in at around
1.6 Tons. It's not much for a car like that. Nevertheless, it's likely to be more
a Grand Torismo than a driving machine like the Elise.
Thus the British sports car makers enter new territories rivaling Porsche and
Ferrai models. When the claimed 0-100kph time of only 3.7 seconds turns out right,
it's even a super car! Although the design isn't as spectacular as that of cars
the likes of the Konigsegg or the Gumbert. But, there is nothing wrong in not
looking like a Gumbert.

Lotus say the car is just a Production Intent Prototype. The production model is
announced to be on sale in 2014. Whether they will change some details or not,
that thing is not clearly a Lotus; but maybe it's is already introduced that
early to inure us to a new design language. And the similarities to Renault cars
does objectively not mean the Elite is bad design work. Definitely not!
